We’re slowly turning our form around and gaining some momentum. Started awful with a draw against AFC Wimbledon, and needed extra time to beat them. Valuable experience for some of the younger players. We grabbed the points we should have in the league this month and it’s hard to complain about the losses against City and United. A semi-final in the Carabao Cup is a great achievement either way. Well done to the lads and a good start to the new year!
We needed some reinforcements to the team, and a defensive midfielder and goalkeeper were identified as top of the list. We spent almost all our money on Marco Kana from Anderlecht and the expectations are therefore high. He will take Dan Neil’s spot as regista or deep-lying playmaker, but he can also do a decent job as a defender.
Patterson has done a good job for two seasons now, but he may not be good enough to be a starter in the Prem. All the money was spent on Kana, so we managed to bring in Pau Lopez on loan from Rome. No option to buy as he is just temporarily filling the gap.
Finally a month we can call relatively easy if that’s a thing in the prem… Nottingham Forest is dead last and it’s three points we should and must get. Great game. Beating Chelsea on penalties in the replay of the Fourth round is also a fantastic feeling. Knocked them out at Stamford Bridge, and hopefully, that’s the start of a great cup run.
Fulham is having a great season sitting 7th in the league, we’re more than happy with a draw against them.
Burnley at Turf Moor will always be a tough game and I would take a 3-0 win there in a heartbeat. Pau Lopez getting clean sheets is great, and the team spirit is on a rise. The Tottenham game shouldn’t do any harm to that, considering we are nowhere near the quality they possess.
Friday night football at St. James Park beating them 3-0. What a great feeling for everyone involved in the club. Let’s hope Newcastle never get relegated, so we can beat them twice every season!
The Leeds and Sheffield United game also proves we can score goals and play entertaining football. Great to see Campbell, Hannibal and Baah on the scoresheet. Got beat by the top two teams in the league and that’s fine. I hoped we could give United a better run for the points, but there is always next year.
Going out of the FA cup against a Championship team truly hurts. We were 1-0 up at halftime and bottled it big time. Rumours are there was a water bottle thrown, but I can not confirm anything.
Premier League is great fun, isn’t it? We managed a couple of strong results after all, especially away against Leicester and Chelsea. Nevertheless, we should beat West Ham and Watford. One and a half months without a win does something to a team, but we were expected to be relegated and the board wants us to fight bravely against relegation. With mediocre results like this, it still feels good to secure the place and another season in the Prem.
Had a hope that we could play well and get some results now that we could drop our shoulders a bit. Maybe a little naive of me but at least we finally got that win. Not a great way to end a tough season like this and I’m really glad it’s over now. We did what was expected of us – nothing more nothing less. Looking forward to the summer ahead and next season. Reinforcements are necessary.
Something is really weird here. Arsenal and United haven’t played their last game and it isn’t scheduled either. So as it stands, we have two teams going down and three going up. How can that happen? After all, it won’t affect us at all.
Academy Player of the Season
O’Hare established himself as a part of the first team and was instrumental in our run in the FA cup. A debut season in the Premier League will be a tough season for any youngster to shine, but he got 22 games in the Prem and made his international debut for Northern Ireland. A lot of great experiences for him this season and hopefully he will continue to develop and next season.
Player of the season
This is a tough one as no players really impressed that much throughout the season. Scoring 17 goals for a struggling team is quite an achievement after all and imagine how much we would’ve struggled without his goals. Southgate have been rumoured to consider him for a spot for England during the season. Taking those rumours with a pinch of salt, but it’s good to see him get some recognition for his talents. Fingers crossed that he can deliver on the same level next year.
